i own a repair shop, and all the ones you named off are pretty good ,but you left one good one out,,and that's the jeep liberty,,its real good small SUV,and they have a better warranty than the ones you mentioned,,i have worked on,and drove most of the ones you mentioned ,and all of them do good ,but the ford explorer is the best one from your list to choose from, they hold up better than a lot of the others do,i judge a vehicle by how much i have to work on it,and i don't get many explorers to work on ,unless they need brakes or a minor tune up,they really don't give a lot of trouble at all,,what you need to do is go test drive a few of them an see which one you really like the most,,that's the best way to look for one,and enjoy it,,buying a new vehicle is fun,so enjoy the buying process, most people dread doing it,,and not me ,i love going car shopping,,good luck, and let us know which one you buy,,i hope this help,s.

For under 20k, it will be a used one. Of the bunch I would to the Xterra. The Explorers and GM products depreciate rapidly and have shortcomings as far as reliability and interior quality goes. The depreciation on the domestics is evident when you can get a 2yr old SUV that was $30000+ new for $18500 used. Someone ate over $10000 on it over a 2 year period. You will do the same should you buy one. The GM Envoy and Chevy Trailblazers are soon to be extinct as well. They will be replaced with car based SUV's. A RAV4 or a CRV would serve you well, but I get the impression you are looking for something a little more "macho". An older 4Runner would be a good choice, and maybe a Pathfinder that is 2-3yrs old would fit the bill too.
