That depends. Personally, I can't use a treadmill. The impact is way too much for my joints. I prefer and eliptical. Also on an eliptical you can go backwards and work a whole other set of muscles. My vote is the eliptical.

Eliptical machines provide a greater range of motion meaning that they work a wider range of muscles in the body. Intensity depends on you, as would a treadmill. I have a treadmill from WalMart. I have had it for almost 2 years. It cost $400.00. In the past I had one from a well known name brand. It cost $2000.00 and my good credit score through my Visa Card! To tell you the truth, I don't notice any differnce at all, except that the belt is a little less wide on this one. It also has capabilities to hook it up to the internet for direct training programs and advice. I don't use that part though. Anyway, anything you do will be a plus. Just remember to try to incorporate the rest of your body too. You can hold weights while pumping your arms on a treadmill. I say it a lot, but I am a firm believer in Pilates and Yoga as part of warmups anfd cooldowns. I have found the best results without the most expensive equipment and when focussing on health as a whole being rather than just physical or otherwise. Look for a variety also. Getting yourself stuck doing the same thing everyday is hard on motivation over time. Your body craves variety in motion just like it craves variety in the foods you eat. As far as diet goes, a person can lose weight just by adding fresh veggies to their diet. Hope you succeed in your goals. Good Luck.

Definitely buy a treadmill! First off, running is the most effective exercise (although it can be harsh on your knees at first if you over do it). Also, with a treadmill, you can work at different intervals, and there are more options. If you bought a treadmill (which you should) you can start off briskly walking on it for about 30 minutes a day, then you can gradually work your way up to running on it for atleast 30 minutes a day. Running will keep you in great shape, and it works all parts of your body, your stomach, and your whole leg. It will tone your legs too! With an elliptical though, you only do one thing, you cant walk or run on it. With a treadmill, you can walk or run, and you can change the incline of it, whether you want to run more or less uphill. Definitely buy a treadmill, you will get the most with your money, and you will be thrilled with the results. Lastly, the best treadmill brand is Cybex, I am a professional runner, I have a Cybex, and they are amazing. Make sure to be exercise for atleast 30 minutes a day, and take one day a week off! Sunday is the best day to take off, you can sleep in too! Good luck with your new Cybex treadmill!

Depends a little what you plan on doing on the treadmill - running or walking. If you have no issues with your knees, feet, or hips, and would not be bothered by a higher impact exercise, then the treadmill would be fine, and has a little more potential for variety.
But if you really LIKE doing one of them more than the other when you go to a gym, then you should definitely get that one. You should absolutely get the one you enjoy more, since then you're more likely to keep doing it.
But if you don't care, then I'd get the treadmill. You can do more different things on a treadmill, especially with the incline and program features.

I would say the cheapest solution is to go outside and walk, as for me it is much less boring than walking on treadmill. Losing weight fast is not safe, and not a good way because you will take it back (and then some) as soon as you start eating normally again. The rapid weight loss that you experience in an overly severe diet is mostly water and, even worse, muscle mass. That makes your metabolism go slower, and then you gain weight again.
The correct way to lose and then maintain your weight is to change your eating habits permanently. You may have to restrain your portions if they are not reasonnable to begin with, and to stop having snacks. Have your meals at regular hours to educate your brain to feel hungry at these times. You may feel hungry in the beginning, and that is normal. But then the stomach shrinks to a smaller size naturally, and you will be less hungry.
If you still want to exercise indoors, because of cold or bad weather in the winter, well there are different schools of thought. The treadmill is perfectly safe if you walk on it. In the case of weight loss, longer is better than harder. That is because your body begins to burn fat only after 20 minutes of exercise, after it has burned the sugar in your blood. If you are capable of sustaining a higher level of exercise for longer than 20 minutes, you may want to run. Some people say that running is bad because of repeated impacts to the joints, but some other studies say that it is actually beneficial for women because it prevents osteoporosis. So, if you like running and have no joint problem, I'd say, go for the treadmill.
However, if you already have pain in the joints, I'd advise you to try the elliptical, which will allow you to exercise at a higher level without joint damage.
Anyway, the best is to try them both, and see what you prefer. And do not forget to do some muscle work as well as cardio to maintain muscle mass.

both have benefits, but the question is which one would you use more??? Before purchasing it. go try both out at a store that sells them or if you know someone with a health club membership ask them if you can go as a guest and try different pieces of equipment. IF you get it and don't like it it a pretty big expense to sit there collecting dust. I prefer the treadmill, but then I'm a runner and the elliptical can help me train for running for speed works outs and hills like the treadmill can. It all comes down to personal preference and what works for you

The elliptical machine is mush safer on your knees. You can also lose .75 more calories faster on the elliptical machine than on the treadmill. You should try the stair master machine you will lose allot of calories if you alternate from the stair master to the elliptical. Take it one day at a time and have fun.

An elliptical is easier on the knees but a treadmill has more options (incline, run, walk, etc.) I lost a ton on the treadmill.

Hi there!
The eliptical is probably the better route since it typically recruits more muscles and is more ergonomical (easier on body). I would start with that.
Precor and Life Fitness are good brands. You get what you pay for. Consumer Reports also has good recommendations on there site.
I believe this answers your question, but if not you may email me: trainer_gregg@yahoo.com.
Good luck with your diet and fitness goals!

You need to try them out and figure out which one is best for you. You will get a great workout on both. I personally like the treadmill better and we bought one last week.... So it just depends on you and the kind of workout you want to do!
