It is a Sony 51'' widescreen and its about three years old. You can only see them when the screen is blank or dark.

Does this happen with any type of input source? (cable, dvd, ect.) If so, sounds like scan re-trace lines. These are blanked out, but if the screen adjustments (located inside the set on the high voltage divider block) are out of adjustment, it will cause this symptom. If your not sure of the adjustment proceedure, you should find someone who is familiar with this. I have seen this problem with this set (providing it is rear projection, not lcd.) Hope this helps.

It sounds like someone may have burnt an image into the tubes... perhaps with a video game...
