Last Friday night, I finally worked up enough nerve to quit smoking. I had been smoking for 14 years, 20-30 cigarettes a day and I decided I had enough. This would be my first REAL attempt at quitting. I decided to go cold turkey, my husband joined me.
I was smoke free, without any cigarettes for 4 days when I had an emotional break down. I was just crying, depressed, throwing things, etc. Needless to say, I lit a cigarette. Followed by 6 more.
Next day, which is today, I have been smoking like normal again. I don't want to smoke though. I WANT to quit. I felt so great just in those 4 days! I had so much more air in my lungs and I loved to walk and breathe the fresh air. I felt very disappointed in myself that I relapsed.
Tomorrow I am going back on the wagon. If I did it the first time, even if only for 4 days then I can do it again! I can quit.
I need tips though from previous ex-smokers who have relapsed. How do you get back on that wagon?
Thanks!
P.S. My hubby is doing great!

It's mind over matter, get back up on the wagon and try it again.

It might be easier if you just try cutting back to smoking only when you have strong urges for awhile before going the distance.

Good luck.

I took me over 5 trys to quit.
If at first you don't suceed; your normal

I quit a 5 pack a day Pall Malls, non filter and smoked about 55 years

Biggest help was an anti-anxiety drug like ativan, for the nic fits.
( get a script from your Dr.)

Don't bother with the patch/gum or inhaler until your down to about 1/2 pack a day.

'Might' work better for you with the expanded time between smokes method, this will get a little more nicotine out of your system every week. Many can't do cold turkey

Marijuana is addictive. I was a daily smoker for a long time, and after I quit, I had a hard time getting out of bed, threw up or felt like i was going to for weeks. It will go away when the ganja is completely outta your system and used to not having it there.

Don`t give up! You are not the only one to slip but don`t beat yourself up just try again. It took me 10 times or more to quit and I had smoked 50 some years. Well now its been about 3 months. I felt good after 4 quit days too. You can do it! I can tell by the way you wrote. Keep up the faith!!! Get some stuffed animals to throw the usually don`t break anything! ha!

There are two components to this addiction.

Physical which is the nicotine and is broken in around 3 to 7 days depending on the person. This would be the shakes and anxiety you feel.

The second portion and the one that everyone has a problem with is Pavlovian conditioning. Essentially smoking is a habit something you do when say you drive your car or after you eat. These are triggers to tell you to start smoking and they can be REALLY powerful and hard to resist.

The primary way most people get through this is to associate a new habit like chewing gum. Want cigarette but I will chew gum. Eventually this chew gum replaces the smoke cigarette and you are smoke free.

Just so you know 5 years after I quit and I would still occasionally catch myself wanting to smoke. So the real solution is that it sucks for about a month and you just have to stick with it.

Its common to relapse especially if you smoked for so long. The reason why you freaked out and had an emotional break down is because your body is withdrawing from the Nicotine. Its a drug and your blood and body is filled with it, so you are going to freak out and cry... I quit for 6 months and when I first started cold turkey... I was sweating in my sleep... hallucinating.. it was scary.. but it will happen..

Needless to say I started to smoke again.. Its rough, but keep on trying.. you will do it eventually. God bless

Good luck!

I quit a year and a half ago. Cold Turkey. My wife tried to, but failed many times. I just told myself that I was done, and made it a pride issues in my head. If said I was done, then I WAS DONE. I don't know if it's tougher for women to give it up, but I do think it's totally in your head. Will power can prevail. My wife still smokes, right in front of me too, but I haven't, a beleive me, there are time I want too, especially after a couple drinks. Mind over matter, good luck !

Its tough, and you do feel depressed, every time I try and quit, its like the loss of a friend.
You have to find your trigger points, I get a lot of work done without cigarettes, but its like working myself to death, and every time you have a relapse it makes you feel worse, but it is not easy, I wish you the best of luck, have you tried the patch, a lot of people have had great success with the patch.
