It should be blue screen of death. The Blue Screen of Death, or more properly the 'Windows stop message' occurs when Windows detects a problem or error from which it cannot recover. The operating system halts and diagnostic information is displayed on a blue screen. In newer versions of the operating system, the contents of the PC's memory are dumped to a file for later analysis.
All Windows XP stop errors are numbered according to the circumstances that caused the error, which assists enormously in troubleshooting them.

Try the following:
Boot from windows installation media. Re-imaging discs will not work - if you insert the disc and boot from it, and it displays a blue screen with a number of driver names scrolling on the bottom, you're doing something right.
Have it go into the recovery console, and type chkdsk at the prompt. See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058 for more information on the recovery console.

You can boot to the XP cd and when you see the Welcome to setup press the letter R
You will get a dos prompt
Then type "chkdsk /p" without the quotes and hit enter
When that is done type "fixboot" and hit enter
"Y" and enter at the prompt
Then type "exit" and hit enter
The system will now reboot into Windows
If for some reason that don't work for you, you can boot to the recovery console like above and...
Type "chkdsk /r" then enter
When done type "exit" and hit enter.
This will take longer, but the system should boot back into Windows.

does your harddisk often show bad sector messages
if yes the problem could be that the part of the hard disk where the bootable files are stored may be rendered unreadable due to ba sectors
you could chk for bad sectors by 'chkdsk' command at command prompt. go to command prompt by pressing f8 at start up. if this dosent help you have to go for reinstalling windows.
it is also possible that some some driver for windows might have corrupted.

You can try to repair your system by inserting a bootable window CD, selecting Repair windows, and in the management console type CHKDSK, this feature will check in your HDD is OK.

If you have a dell computer it means there is a hardware failure. If its another kind of computer it could be that the registry has an invalid value in it. Try a system restore.

Sounds like a media failure. Looks like you may need a new drive. If the recovery disk and repair options do not work, then you lost the drive. I have had that myself.

If your computer is not working properly while you are working on it, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.
