To serve the Creator.
I know, kind of a let-down, huh? Well, it has its perks, anyway.
...Wait, that's more of a "purpose" then a "meaning," isn't it?
The MEANING of our existence is an expression of divine benevolence. The Creator was stuck with all this love and kindness, but had no one to share it with. So He created the universe, and on this tiny little rock somewhere in the outskirts he put plants, and animals, and ultimately human beings, to be the recipients of said benevolence.
That probably sounds a little silly at first, but let it roll around in your head for a while. It's basically the Orthodox Jewish approach to existence, and it's definitely one of my favorite theories.
For more on the subject, I'd recommend the short essay entitled "Why Did G-d Create the World," which you can find here: http://www.beingjewish.com/basics/whycreate.html
So there's your Jewish explanation. Now you just need explanations from like, a Christian, a Hindu, and an Atheist, and you'll get a nice little spectrum of opinions. Or, alternatively, we could all walk into a bar, and hilarity would no doubt ensue.

Andrei Bitov, wrote "In my twenty-seventh year, while riding the metor in Leningrad I was overcome with a despair so great teha life seemed to stop at onece, preempting the future entirely, let alone any meaning. Suddenly, all by itself, a phrase appeared: "without God life makes no sense". Repeating it in astonishment, I rode the phrase yo like a moving staircase, got out of the metor and walked into God's light."
Turning this insight around, with God existence has meaning and that meaning is to do with God himself. Could this be the starting point to an answer to your question. To me it is and the answer centres on the person of Jesus Christ because only in him do I see evidence for the character of God. That evidence being based on an historical event - the death of Jesus and his subsequent return to life and a startlingly changed body. That is how I have been answering this question for myself, but it started with the realisation that existence loses meaning with the creator of that existence.
