I'm an atheist and I watched the Peanuts Christmas Special as a kid.

Society has so many religious references that it's impossible to avoid them, the Peanuts thing is just a small blip that has no meaning at all.

Truth is most atheist are not bothered by religion , it's just that we think religious people are kind of silly. The need for a "higher power" is understandable and we don't blame people for those feelings. It's just kind of hard to choke down when people take it seriously.

When my children were growing up we didn't restrict their TV watching based on those kind of factors. But as I recall, not a single one ever found Peanuts even remotely interesting. As far as cartoons were concerned, when they were that small they preferred Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck (they liked most of Warner Bros. cartoons ) - Sesame Street & The Electric Company.

Being kids, they did demand "gift-equity" with Christians AND Jews.

I am atheist, I explained the origins of winter solstice celebration, and the jesus story, the hanukkah story, the santa story, are all different parts of the "winter holidays". For us the "true meaning of christmastime" is to take a break from work and school to spend time with friends and family, to relax and exchange gifts and enjoy good food and good company.

W e let our kids watch some of The same things you do.

You will see fewer atheists kids watching friday the thirteenth or Texas chain saw massacre, or chucky than you would christians.
There are very feqw children whoi haven;t seen these shows.
Another thing is that most atheists chilkdren are not atheist. They ar eeither christian or non demonination.Although none of mine were atheist I have been one all of my life.
My two sons are christinas non practicing.
My two daughters are beleivers in reincarnation but not christianity.

By the time my kid was old enough to watch it and actually think about it, he'd be old enough to know that it's all just a fairy tale told by a cartoon and not something to be believed. He'd also know that the REAL reason for Christmas was a pagan celebration of the winter solstice, which was equally as much a fairy tale.

No reason not to, purely for enjoyment. It's not difficult at all (for a healthy, rational mind) to make the distinction between cartoon characters and real people or between fantasy and legitimate philosophies.

I allowed my children to watch the show. I thought it was quality television programming and would do them no harm. My children attended many different churches as they grew up but all of them in the end beleive as I do that there is no specific god.

Around here, no. All of the atheists in my neighborhood have stabbed out their childrens' eyes. You get rid of that 'eye for an eye' threat and it's pandemonium.
