I love Basset Hounds, and have often considered owning one. However, I've heard from many sources that they have a distinctive "hound odor." I love dogs and can deal with the occasional smelliness and messes, but I'm not sure I want to live with a constant odor. Can anyone give me some insight into this? Thanks :)

I have a 3 year old male basset. He has an odor, but it's not Stinky, it's almost like tortilla chips actually. I actually enjoy the way he smells. Now if he gets into something or goes swimming then he stinks. I bathe 1x a month, making sure to keep his ears clean and dry, alot of odor can come from their ears. They are prone to ear infections because of the floppiness of their ears so they must be kept clean so that they don't stink.

I really never noticed the smell until I heard about it from other people. If your houndie is kept clean and dry the smell isn't noticable. They are wonderful dogs to have (not that I'm biased :D) Be sure to check out your local rescue or breeder.

I also posted a link of a web page that has everything to do with Bassets including the rescues for each state.

I logged on today to find out how I can get rid of that odor! I bathe my basset hound, Lulu, every 2 weekswith warm water and dog shampoo and she still has a musky scent. It's kind of like corn chips...it's not overwhelming though. All dogs have a scent...actually, my cocker spaniels have more of a scent than Lulu does. On the up side, the oils that create that smell give them a shiny coat!

Does a hound smell like a hound? I'd say it's a possibility. It's not as bad as the 'doggy' smell though, and if you keep his ears clean (which you'd need to do 3 times a week anyway) he won't smell nearly as much.

They do have a scent, but it's not offensive. I have friends who were breeders and usually had 3 adults in the house and there was never enough of an odor for it to be a concern. I don't think that should stop you, but why not visit a breeder and you can smell for yourself?

Most living animals have some sort of smell, but in the case of a dog, we're not talking about a nasty skunk like odor.
I've never known a reasonably clean dog or cat that smelled as bad as the folks in a gymnasium.
