The reason for the season...I am a Sunday school teacher at a Christian church. I teach 5 and 6 year olds. I would like to give them a list of ways they can celebrate Jesus at Christmas time along with their Christmas gifts. Any ideas would be appreciated.

This might help :)

I walked into the living room last night where my two youngest were looking at the Christmas tree, arm in arm singing...

Happy birthday to Jesus
Happy birthday to Jesus
I believe in Santa clause
please bring me lots of presents
Happy birthday to Jesus.

The idea is to maybe have them throw a birthday party for Jesus, and the preesnt they give Him is their love and devotion.

Drawing a manger scene or pictures of angels (or both). Putting on a play. Helping others during the holidays (buying a toy for toys for tots or taking part in a church function). Writing a story about Him. Reciting a passage from the Bible. Maybe something like a 12-days of Christmas in which they build or do something each day and bring the final project in for display after the holiday (kind of a Holiday 'art' show or project fair - invite the church and/or parents).

FYI, I don't know how well kids will get the 'celebrate Jesus at Christmas' idea. You're in a better position to tell with your class than anyone else. Having them do something fun and educational together as a class or as a class assignment and sharing it with the church or the parents might be a better bet.

You might also involve the parents in the process by asking them for ideas and involvement (stage managers, costume makers, etc).

Whatever you decide, it's a great idea and you sound like a great teacher. Keep up the good work! And, Merry Christmas!

I think simply celebrating Christmas in the commercial way that we Americans do undermines the whole importance of the holiday. When we have a tree and give presents and spend spend spend throughout the season, we are reinforcing traditions which were only started to cover up the existing pagan rituals which occurred around this same time. The actual biblical connection to the things we do to celebrate are scant at best. Sure people can rationalize these actions by finding meaning in them. But it a horrible thing to think that we have lost so much connection with our faith that we must adopt and rationalize customs which have to true biblical origin. If you want to try and invoke some meaning of the holiday into the kids, try to show them a more meaning full side of the holiday. Work with them to help the lives of the less fortunate. Try to concentrate on family and Friends rather then presents and cake. It is the values that are instilled in them now that they will carry with them for the rest of there lives.

A great question. I love the idea of the birthday party, complete with cake and birthday song. Let the kids make gifts to be given to local orphanages, children's shelters, or to families in need. Or bake lots of little cakes and let the kids decorate them. Then deliver the cakes themselves to the orphanage or abused children's shelter. Inspire them to think beyond what Santa will bring them at Christmastime.

I've heard that there are some good ideas in Sharon Jaynes' book, _Celebrating a Christ-Centered Christmas_. That's not a personal recommendation, as I haven't read the book.

How can history be so accurate? Finding records of Jesus birth is a stretch, but then giving the exact month & day? No chance. ^ I thought Jesus was born in Autumn not spring. Jesus NEVER celebrated Christmas.

I think an important thing for 5 and 6 year olds to know is that many of the things they currently do are celebrating Jesus.

Giving gifts to one another - we do this because we recognize that God sending His Son to us is His gift to us. In recognition of this love, we give gifts of love to others.

The evergreen tree - the evergreen tree reminds us that when we are in Jesus Christ, we too have everlasting life and will continue to live in Heaven after we have left this world.

The lights on our trees and houses - Jesus is the light of the world. Jesus' words and life are like a light into our life that helps us see how wonderful this life is. The lights on our tree and house remind us that Jesus is the light.

I also think it is important to let them know that Christmas is not just one day, but a season that begins on Christmas day and lasts for 12 days. Have them tell their parents to keep the tree up and the lights on their house on for 12 days of Christmas.

Do your kids and thier parents a favour and teach them the TRUTH, after all thats what Jesus was all about, the truth about the good news.

Christmas originates from the Pagan worship fo the Sun God, which somehow got changed into the Son of Gods birthday.
Father christmas, xmas trees and the like are also pagan traditions adapted to satisfy the masses.

Celebrate and have a good time, but explain the facts, they will thank you for it later.

The truth is the everlasting light which cannot be stopped.

There is only one reason for celebrating the birth of Jesus.

MT 1:22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: 23 "The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel" --which means, "God with us."

You could tell them that they could celebrate his life be following his example. Is there a better way to show appreciation than by trying to be like Him?
