My fingernails break, split, peel.....you name it. It's been going on for the last few years, I tried every product out there to try to strengthen them. Does anyone know if this is a medical problem, is there a certain type of food I should be eating or should I just give up all together on having gorgeous long nails?!

I also have weak nails and the fact is, it's genetic. My mom has weak nails, and so does my sister, my aunt and so did (I'm told) my grandmother. Annoyingly, my brother has wonderful nails. He also has thick hair and is the only one in the family who doesn't get cavities. Life is so unfair.

I simply can't grow long nails. I'm seamstress and play guitar so it doesn't bother me much - long nails would get in the way. But to avoid having my nails split at inopportune times, I baby them:

1. Never cut your cuticle. After a bath or shower when they are soft from the water, gently push them back with a towel or an orange stick wrapped in cotton. The cuticle is vital for making sure your nail grows properly.

2. Moisturize your cuticles. I uses a lavendar & lemongrass oil rubbed right in to the cuticle a couple times a week. Other people recommend using lotion right before bed and sleeping with cotton gloves on.

3. Don't use nail polish remover more than twice a month. It weakens your nails.

4. Eat right. Protein and vitamin K deficiencies both weaken nails. These used to be rare conditions in this country, but with some of the fad diets out there right now, it's worth repeating.

5. Drumming your fingers will stimulate blood flow to your fingertips and may aid in strengthing nails - but it will annoy the hell out of your co-workers.

I don't know how old you are, but ridges and splitting go along with the aging process. Generally getting enough protein in your diet helps with this, as does the vitamin Biotin. You can buy Biotin tablets in the vitamin section of any store, and it is supposed to help you have healthy hair, nails and skin. Worth a try. Generally it's better to keep your nails at a reasonable length, and you can get those emery boards with multiple sides to shape, file, or get out ridges. Good luck.
