My dog has papers and I am not palnning on breeding him to just anybody. He's an American Bulldog and they aren't too common in my area. They can't be AKC registered but he is CKC. He's a beautiful big boy. I just want to see one litter of his puppies as lot''s of our friends want one.

First of all, why is he CKC registered? Do you have a pedigree on this boy? American Bulldog's can be registered with ABA and UKC. How do you plan on showing him in performance events? Have you had him OFA certified? They are prone to HD. Get all the genetic testing done on him first, get him titled, and then think about studding him out. If I was thinking about one of these dogs, I definately would not buy one that was CKC registered. A lot of people buy dogs from other registeries with limited registration and then they CKC register them so that they can breed them.

If you are want to breed you dog for "free or cheap" he is probably not worth breeding. CKC is not a reputable breed registry as any dog can be registered as a certain breed without being a "purebred". There are too many genetic issues in dogs, including bulldogs, let the reputable breeders handle it.

I have an AB, and many top breeders will breed just too get a pup or two in return. However,(please don't take this wrong) breeding just too breed is ridiculous. The dog MUST have his hips tested, NCL tested, and there ARE sexually transmitted diseases. Showing and working your dog will give you a VERY good idea of his WORTHINESS too breed, and I can guarantee that if you contact any of the breeders that are listed in his pedigree they will be more than happy too assess the dog for themselves, and help you out if they can... but choosing the RIGHT mate is just as important as the health screenings... breeding SHOULD BE a lot of work, and COSTLY, otherwise your breeding for the wrong reasons, and possibly adding too the negative gene pool and unwanted/euthanized population.

Come join us here... we love AB's, love to talk, love pictures... and there is a wealth of knowledge available.

PS, there are many registery's for the AB including ABNA, ABA, NKC, BBC, UKC.. the list goes on, and many show dog are registered to multiple Clubs

Don't count on your friends actually taking the puppies. A lot of people breed thinking their friends will take the pups.

Good thing for you, the one with the female dog keeps the puppies...not you. So you won't be the one finding them homes.

Get your dog neutered. Do a search for bull dogs on http://www.petfinder.com and see a sample of how many are homeless.

Questions to ask yourself first:

Have you screened you dog for genetic problems?

Are his parents free of those problems?

Tested for brucellosis or STD's?

Over 2 years of age?

Certified?

OFA?

Strengths and weakness'?

These are just a few of the questions you will need to know the answers to in order to breed your dogs with a reputable breeder. You are looking for a reputable breeder and not a BYB, right?

Do you know what is standard for your dog?

Why are you breeding?

Pedigree? A pedigree usually has at least three generations of the puppies' ancestors listed.

Do you participates in some sort of dog related events such as dog shows, obedience, agility, schutzhund, sled dog racing, herding, field trials, lure coursing, earth dog trials, etc. Breeders do something like this with their dogs.

What club do you belong to? All-breed club, obedience club, etc.

There aren't many they are everywhere. The last search here was for texas but check your area.

The worse is that American bulldogs are very VERY often mistaken for pits and then get taken by authorities to be euthanized. Get him neutered. Don't add to the unnecessary deathrate of dogs.

If a dog is good enough to be used as a stud, it's name will be in Show or Field Trial results often enough that people will know.
I have never advertised one of my stud dogs, they do it all by themselves.

Why would you want to breed your dog? Don't be a back yard breeder! There are already plenty of homeless animals in the world and we don't need any more.
