OK most of the answers cover the bases but here is a check list of things to do...
1......check the cars paperwork to see if their is a code card or the number has been written in it..
2 .....if not time for help from some one who knows a bit about car audio poss a friend...get them to remove the stereo and check to see if the code has been written on the casing...some car dealers do this when they are removed for safe keeping...if not
3....now for the pro's..go to your local car audio shop and get them to check all of the above...if the answer is still no
4.....get the price for a recode,,i use to charge £25 pounds some shops will try to charge a fee for the removal and refit..ask them their charges before they under take the work so you don't feel oblige to let them continue, because you don't want to pay to much ..the term is beond economical repair..£50 MAX
5......Don't bother with the main agent FORD VAUXHALL ECT they normally can't be bothered and try to charge to much.
6...If all else fails time for a new stereo...it is near Christmas may be santa will take pitty on you spanking new cd/mp3 with i-pod input...
I hope this is of use to you and good luck...

You will need the code as the power to the system has been cut off.The code should have been supplied to you when you bought the car even if you had it second hand.Your local dealership may be able to help (at a price)! If that fails some garages will unlock it ,but will obviously make a charge for this. Good luck.

There should be a reset code in the manual for the stereo, as some cars, when the battery is disconencted during a service for instance, will reset their own stereos (very annoying!).

If there isn't one onthe car manual, then your local service garage or dealer should be able to help you find it.

Yea I think the idea behind the code is so that if someone steals your radio they won't be able to use it or something. But who steals stock radios anyways. Your dealer should be able to help you, and if they're nice, give you the code at no charge. There are some website around that have codes, but I'm not sure if they charge or not for them.

car make and year would help to narrow the problem down as not all cars need the code re entering if the stereo itself has not been unpluged

The maker of the car can find out for you if you prove you own the car!
