1) You end up with Dr in front of your name, which is always pleasant when filling in forms.
2) When you go to German speaking countries they address you as Herr Doktor or Frau Doktor and you feel important.
3) As far as motivation goes, you might have been offered a research grant for your PhD, which gives you a few more years as a perpetual student.
4) As far as job prospects go, if you have your eye on an academic career, then this is possibly a good start.
5) If your academic career doesn't work out, then you can always opt for being a librarian or a teacher of English as a foreign language and make it look as though that is what you were aiming for all along.
6) You might actually be in love with the subject, which is the only really convincing reason as far as I am concerned.

A linguist is a well paid person.
If they had a PHD then I am sure the pay would be greater.

Because it seems more credible than a PHD in art history.
