How long should I wait before I try it on with my buddies ex, (they just broke up), but she's really hot, and I've liked her for a while.

i think the man law states at least 6 months if they are hot

How important is this person. If your friend is more important to you, never hit on the ex. If having the ex as your girlfriend is more important, I'd still wait like two weeks. I'd just like to mention that friends often last a lot longer than girlfriends, so you should really think about it. Maybe, you should even ask your friends permission. It might be a good idea. If you don't care that you might loose your friend, then I geuss the time is really up to you. But, I would out of respect wait at least two weeks. Good luck! You are in a complicated situation!
