Signs you see everyday, Like yesterday , I saw a sign in Burger King. All in Spanish. No English whatsoever....I live in Houston!!!!!! So can I safely assume that burger king supports Illegal immigration by catering to them? Even signs written in English and Spanish.....It should be English only....Am I right?

Well, if they only have Spanish, I'd boycott. If they don't need my language, they don't need my money. I expect Spanish in a restaurant in Spain or Mexico, and if there is no English translation, I make do. Here, I expect to see English.

However, people are going to write signs in the languages their customers use in sufficient numbers to make the cost of printing the signs worth while. If Farsi speaking people are more comfortable spending their money in places that translate into Farsi, you will see signs in Farsi at establishments that cater to them.

You may not be aware of this, but the United States has no official language. It isn't English, it never has been English. Furthermore, Houston is within the region that has always had native Spanish speakers. Well, not always, but since before the United States obtained it. You see, not all of the Mexicans that lived in the Southwest left when the Mexican government lost that territory, so there remained a substantial Spanish-speaking Mexican population there.

Oh, and not everyone who enters the United States and speaks Spanish is an illegal immigrant. Some of them are legal immigrants, some are just coming across the border to buy something or visit relatives, etc.

No, you are totally wrong. Do you expect English signs when you visit other countries? Why are you making the assumption that it's only illegals that these restaurants are catering to with these Spanish signs? Has it ever crossed your mind that there might be a sizeable population of Spanish speaking people who are here legally?

These restaurants are doing their best to serve the needs of the greatest number of customers. If that means having Spanish signs, that's what they're going to do whether you think the signs should be in English or not.

You know, there IS such a thing as legal immigration, and not all Spanish-speaking people in this country are illegals. Some are university students, others are legal immigrants, and so on. Once a person is in this country, it's INS' problem to sort out who belongs here and who doesn't.

But for the sake of the people who ARE already here -- legally or otherwise -- and still struggling with the language, why not post in Spanish and English? Most of the Hispanic people I know (no, I don't ask to see their green cards) are trying to learn English, but it takes time.

Personally, I have no problem with signs in Spanish if it makes someone else's life easier. I'd appreciate the same courtesy if I was in Mexico.

Edit:

Legals "should already know English?" If your company sent you to another country, does that mean you should also have a perfect command of the native language before you go there?

Good luck with that. . .it can take a long time to learn even the basics of ordering food and asking directions in a language such as Japanese or German.

Speaking of vocabulary, how about learning the English word "Tolerance"?

I agree with you somewhat.. I don't think they are necessarily catering to illegal immigrants, but I do think that English should be our official language... I think anyone should feel free to speak any language in their homes, with their families, and with their friends, but I think as a country of people living together, we need to be able to communicate with everyone else..Everyone is making this big deal about it, but no one is looking in the future.. before it was just a given, English is our language, it is what we are taught from day one and all through school... what happens when no one cares anymore, anyone can speak any language they want.. what happens when you no longer can understand anyone on TV, you can't understand what the Politicians are saying, because they speak 5 different languages, you can't teach a class in school because half the kids don't speak English-and you can't separate them because then that would be racist, how long you have to stay in school when they have to teach you all the different languages to communicate with everyone else in this country, you go up to a cashier in the store who doesn't speak any English-you can't find out any information, these are just some examples, there are many more.. what is going to happen when it's no longer English and no one in this Country can communicate with each other...

I can see your point, and I can see wayfarout's point too.

In the L.A. phone book there are directions printed in 6 different languages. Three of them are in an Asian script. I can understand the need for that if you are first coming to the US and you need to get around or handle something like getting a telephone.
However, if you are going to move to this great country then you ought to learn to speak, read & write English.
And I do support English becoming the official national language.

Look lady, I live in Houston too,(southeast area) there are alot of hispanic people and so what there are couple of signs written in spanish, they still don't compare to how many are written in english. Burger King may not support illegal immigration, they are just trying to reach to more of a viariety of customers, its just bussiness. heck there signs written in vietnamese if you pay attention and if you really live in Houston, I don't see you complaining about those. Signs are signs they don't show their stand on the issue of illegal immigration.

Businesses do not want to lose customers. If they know the Hispanic population is growing in this country, they are going to have signs in Spanish. Burger King is not going to care whether someone is legal or not as long as they pay for the food.

Corporations are one of the biggest supporters of illegal immigrants. From catering to them to receive their money in their businesses to hiring them to avoid paying decent wages, insurance, income, social security and medicare taxes.

If the gov't were really sincere in cracking down on illegal immigration they'd institute huge penalties for any employer found hiring an illegal. Possibly even implement jail time for the individuals responsible for the hiring on their 2nd or 3rd offense. If there are no jobs for these criminals, the won't come here.
