use Nivea CREAM.....do not use any lotions...just use creams. Because they are more dense and will keep your hands moist.

every time you wash your hands, use an exfoliant; it need be nothing exotic or expensive; use plain old BAKING SODA!! here's how: wash your hands, leave the lather on, then pour about a tablespoon in your hand; or, better yet, enough to fill the palm of your hand...then add water a few drops at a time, not all at once!!! until it forms a paste.......then continue to wash your hands with this lather/soda mixture...rinse with COOL not hot water, and dry then IMMEDIATELY apply your hand creme or lotion...try to find a creme/lotion with glycerin as one of the 1st 3 or 4 ingredients....if not, any moderately-priced hand creme will do; DO NOT buy the $1 kind, as you get what you pay for and you want at least some decent ingredients in there to do the job for you!!!!!!! if you do this all winter long, it should help...if you feel you are overdoing the baking soda, use it maybe every other time you wash your hands, or every other day, or whatever is comfortable for you...........you can also apply your lotion at night and wear those little cotton gloves overnight; most drugstores carry them....good luck. email me if you have any other questions, etc.......

This is gonna sound kind of dumb compared to the other answers, but use Johnson&Johnson nightime baby lotion. Or, you could use Johnson&Johnson 24 hour. It is supposed to keep your hands soft all day. It only lasts about 3-4 hours though, but that is better than most. The good thing about baby lotion is that #1 it's cheap, and #2 they sell it in travel sizes. You can buy a small bottle and keep it in your purse, so you can put it on as often as you need. By the way, don't wash your hands with liquid soap or DIAL. They are made to remove dirt and grease, so they leave your hands without natural oils. I hope this was helpful.

I second the Vaseline treatment - this is not the lotion, but the petroleum jelly (cheaper store brands also okay). It's yucky but get white gloves from a 2nd hand store and they'll contain it.
Also, there's something called Bag Balm. It's good if you have cracked skin. They put it on cow's udders, which can get inflamed and infected if cracked, not to mention uncomfortable for old Bossie. It's medicated & smells pretty bad, but it always works. I gave some to a guy who was working with fiberglass plumbing parts, and they helped even that.

First of all be careful what you wash your hands with. Don't use strong soaps. Try to use hand soaps that contain moisturizerers like Dove or softsoap. My hands get dry in the winter also and what I use is Aveeno hand lotion for dry skin. It works wonders for me and my hands stay moisturized for a long time. The lotion is almost $8.00 but its worth it.
Hope this helps.

My hands dry out too. I grew tired of alot of the hand creams on the market, as they made my hands left feeling greasy all the time. Then I used Oil of Olay beauty fluid on them. Worked like a charm, and they smell really good too!

at bedtime put alot of vaseline on your hands then put on gloves or socks and when you wake in the morning your hands will be soft and not dry, also after washing your hands apply cream or lotion everytime afterwards this will help maintain the softness.

Drink plenty of water to keep your skin hydrated and use a face pack of ripe bananas and honey. You can find more cheap, effective and natural home remedies for dry skin at http://www.wellnesstalk.org/dryskin.html

If your hands are that bad then you should really see a Dr. but you can also try these...........
Nivea
Aveeno
also you could try soaking your hands in some type of oil (baby oil) and then wear loose rubber gloves to bed and see what happens.
You may be pleasantly suprised, as grass as that may sound to try.
