I am mainly interested in staying within Bangkok for mostly shopping, and some sight-seeing.

It really depends upon your spending habits. Bangkok is a city where you can spend millions in a week or you can choose to live cheaply. I will try to explain the expense for an average person.

Hotel: Baht 1000 to Baht 3000 per day.
Food:
Burgers/KFC: ฿100 to ฿200
Good Thai Food: ฿150 to ฿400
Japanese Food: ฿400 to ฿800.

Transportation:
In and around the city, BTS Sky train is the best option. See, http://www.bangkokbaby.com/bangkok-city/bts-skytrain/
Sky train will cost you a maximum of 40baht per journey. Or you can buy a full day ticket for Baht 100.
Taxi minimum charge is 35baht. And you can reach at most part of the city within Baht250.

For 1 week, it is about 18000 baht will be more than enough for the transport, shopping & eating expenses. I went there for 8D 7N and only spent 12000 baht on travelling, shopping & eating expenses. Trust me, I bought many things and food back, so I think 18000 baht should be more than enough for you.

Just remember to save 700 baht for the airport tax for each person before you depart from the Bangkok airport.

You probably could deal with about 4000 baht per day or about USD 100 per day. Then bring extra just in case or charge it on a credit card.

Exchange your cash at the airport. I was just there last week and the exchange rate was 1 percent lower at the malls and banks. And you get a better exchange rate for larger bills. For US money 50's or 100's and make sure they are new bills and not torn.

Have a good trip.

for a week about 800 bucks and then trade it in when you get there, i go ever year for a month, and i take about 3,000 bucks. Shopping, girls and so on. it is a very cheap country and you can get all most any thing you want. the hotel a stay at is a 4 star and it was only 30 a night. so yeah. 800 and you'll still have money left over. just don't go crazy are get robbed.

You don't need to take any baht. Take your atm card and pull cash 5000, 10,000 baht a day. Unless you have a source of counterfiet baht notes that you want to take with you. Or put everything on a credit card, deny you ever left your country and write it off.

Really - how much money you should take depends on what do you want to do. So much shopping and sight seeing and food and entertainment!!

Just bring as much as you can because you can always spend more. Things may be cheap but there are expensive stuff too. You can get ANYTHING in Thailand.
