The treadmill is a high impact exercise machine--it places high stress on you lower body when running or walking. I would highly recommend an elliptical--it's low impact on the knees and joints and you can still get an excellent cardiovasulcar workout. Our website has a few recommended ellipticals at www.engineeringfitness.com under "Holiday Gift Ideas".

The best alternative from running on treadmill is walking. Don't laugh, but walking briskly isn't that taxing on your knees and will get your heart-rate up enough to reap the benefits from this form of cardio.

I myself employed walking as my main cardiovascular form of exercise, since I have two bad knees from birth. In the past, I can attribute losing 50 lbs to my walking with weight training.

First, get a diagnosis about your actual knee problem. It's unlikely that walking on/off a treadmill would ruin your knee. Possibly it's something that can be corrected with some PT. It could be arthritis. muscle imbalance, torn ligaments, etc. Get it checked so you know what the problem is and you will be better informed about what to do about it.

You should probably switch to an elliptical machine. they are 0 impact, so your knees should feel much better! And you will get a better workout too. If that doesn't work, then try a spinning bike or just a regular bike machine.

You could try an elliptical trainer or a recumbant bike (the kind where you sit back and your legs go out in front of you instead of down.) Both are easier on the knees.
Avoid like crazy: step machines.

I'm 55, use a Nordic Track. Low impact to the ankles, knees, etc. Got mine from Ebay for 45 bucks. Great CVR workout.

An eliptical trainer gives you the same action without as much impact. If that doesn't work, a bike is a little easier on the knees too.

Really, your just doing cardio. That can be achieved in many other ways. Your just getting your heart rate up by running maybe try circuit training where you dont use your knees, Upper body etc.
