I have had a flu/cold for about four days and never have red eyes but mine have been bloodshot like i have been on a week drunk. Also last evening my eyes hurt with pressure behind them so much I had to stop reading..Its pretty normal..
Its caused by sinus pressure and the drainage that builds up in behind the eyes

A good question, not one that researchers ask nowadays. The ancient Greeks thought that the cerebrospinal fluid drained out of the brain into the sinuses, ears and eyes. A cold can be construed as rupture of a drainage pathway by a virus, releasing CSF-- the running nose. Initial watering of the eyes may be due to the initiating viral rupture, or, if delayed, to damming up of lymph drainage vessels in the sinuses causing back presure in the eyes and the CSF outlow to be diverted here.
