Bostonian is partialy right.There is air over hydrolics in all modern aircrafts.Mostly to dampen the noise of the pumps and actuators.
Foker aircrafts had a lot of aircrafts that had pneumatic only systems on them.Not a drop of hydrolic fluid was used.
The F27 used bleedair from the engines an well as airpumps to charge reservoirs inside the aircraft.
Some pneumatics are used as emergency systems ,to lover the landing gear and apply the brakes in the event of a total hydrolic failiure.
From the flap,landing gear and brakes every thing was air actuated.
Tha advantage to air systems are that when they leak there is no big mess to clean up and easy to replenish.
Disadvantage is when a line or component fails it makes a big boom as all the pressurised air expandt and destroys a lot of stuf.
