keep packs of sugar-free chewing gum on your person, in your car, at work, it the kitchen, etc....and when you have an urge to snack, chew some gum, instead.

Well done you for quitting smoking. Many people's metabolism does slow down when they quit smoking but the biggest reason for increasing weight is, as you have already identified, the increase in snacking. What you have done really is to replace one addiction with another.
If you are cravings lots of sugary snacks then I suggest a colonic as I always completely lose my desire for sugar afterwards. You would also do best on a low GL diet (the one by Patrick Holford is great) which would ensure a slow release of glucose into your blood stream which can also help to stop snacking and help with weight loss.
You could also snack on things which are beneficial to your health such as raw carrot sticks with some houmous, fruit, small amount of nuts or seeds. Just stay away from low fat products (which always have a higher carbohydrate value) and sugary snacks which will cause a sharp increase in blood sugar followed by a rapid fall which will make you reach for another snack. Its also a good idea to avoid caffeine.
One of my friends also tried the Paul McKenna approach (can't recall the name of the book but it wil be easy to find on Amazon) or alternatively book an appointment with a hypnotherapist to control the snacking urge.
Hope this is helpful.

Congrats! I quit over a year ago now, took up kungfu (and the odd snack substitute) and put on a stone. It was worrying. Im the healthiest ive ever been and i couldnt understand it. If you work out regularly, it could be because muscle weighs more than fat so take that into consideration. Im slowly losing the weight, which seems harder now than ever, i've never had to work at my weight previously. keep a bowl of fruit or nuts near you, they fill you up quickly and keep you going for longer.

Well done, i gave up smoking nine months ago, being my fourth attempt and am feeling great apart from the putting on weight, but at least i can breathe properly now, my main problem is not snacking, it is the size of my portions i eat, i have tried to cut down but an hour or so after eating i feel peckish again. x x
And alcohol doesn't help lol x x

Try changing your habits. Do you snack instead of smoking? I too have quit, 2 mths plus now. I started jogging the same day I quit because I was concerned not with putting weight on, but how difficult it would be to take it off again.
Drink lots of water, what works for me is bringing carrot sticks to work.....thats my snack.
Good luck and congradulations

Try to limit yourself to 3 meals a day with a sweet or pudding after your evening meal for a treat.
Buy a few boxes of healthy cereal that you like the taste of and have some of that instead of snacks.

I'm at weight watchers at the mo since I quit, just to keep myself on the straight and narrow, I do the no count plan and its really good.
It only costs £4.95 a week to get weighed and have your motivational speech, which really is the equivalent of 1 pack of cigs!
It will help though, I've been quit for 11 months now!
good Luck!

self control is your only option. you've been addicted to a substance for such a long time. while u were quitting, u probably picked up eating as a replacement and didn't even realize it. you just have to say no to the snacks. working out is great. but at end of the day its about self control.

Do the cabbage soup diet for a week... I know it sounds disgusting but it will fill you up constantly and is really healthy.... and it works.....Then it's up to you....
It consists of lots of fruit and veg , plenty of protein, and a healthy soup that you might become addicted to.... and I'm an ex smoker.who had the same problem.
