What you are seeking is done quite often. There are a lot of advanced amateurs who will give you prints or a CD of the shots in exchange for you time as a model. The term is usually either TFCD or TFP. If you were in the southern US I could point you to some websites but since your are elsewhere I'd suggest a google search with the name of your town and those two terms (TFCD, TFP). I've done several of those shoots myself. I'm no pro but always yield a good quantity of nice images that a person can use in their portfolio.
I'd ask the photog for references so you can talk to someone he has worked with before, look at his/her work, and bring someone with you to the shoot. Make sure you clearly understand the terms of the deal before the shooting starts. If you need the pics quickly then the photographer must know that and be willing to accomodate that.

The advice given here is very useful. Another idea would be to approach your local camera club or photographic society. They often have portrait nights, where in return for posing, you are given a copy of the photos. The advantages of this are that
A) you will get a set of photos from a number of photographers, giving variation of styles.
B) Camera clubs have members who have great experience of photography. Indeed quite a lot are ex-professionals.

Emma....keep a couple of things in mind. One is remember cheap is cheap, you may not get much if your not willing or able just yet to invest a bit. But more important than that, be very careful who you solicit in the first place. I had a beautiful and dear friend who got involved in a very similar situation and the outcome was disastrous. She was sexually assaulted, beaten, and later died by a madman posing as a photographer. He was going to,"help further her career". She believed he was totally legitimate and we later learned he had hurt others before her. She has been gone 3 years now and he of course, is in prison, but we still miss her. That is why your question just jumped out at me. So please be careful and be absolutely sure who your are dealing with. God Bless.

I know a few photographers so will ask how to do this on the cheap...my suggestion would be to ring up your local university and try and get through to that department...either that or hang around outside the building

Don't waste your time with photographers, they're just out for a quick buck! Think before you pose!
