what are the advantages and disadvantages of booking an airport hotel?

Advantages:
1) Close to the airport
2) Quick and easy access for early flights

Disadvantages:
1) Airport Hotels are usually away from the city centre
2) Costs to get into town
3) Will hear all the planes so you will not really get a good nights sleep.

The biggest advantage of an airport hotel is convenience. It's right near the airport--- sometimes connected by a walkway like the Marriott in Phildaelphia--- and the hotel often has a shuttle to take you to the airport. The biggest disadvantage I think is location. You get the convenience of being near the airport which makes travel easy, but most airports are set way outside the city. You usually won't have a huge selection of restaurants, bars, shopping or attractions without driving and if you don't have a car, you'll either need to pay for cabs back and forth, or hope there's a hotel shuttle. You really won't get to see much of the city all the way out by the airport. You can find hotels in all price ranges near the airport and near the city so price shouldn't be a pro or con on either side. Airport hotels are often cheaper than downtown hotels.

Appologies if i'm reading this question wrong, but why should there be any disadvantages to any other hotel, other than the odd plane flying over maybe?

I've just stayed a night in the Sofitel at Gatwick before a long flight to Dubai and it was just brilliant.
Drove down the previous day, stayed over night at then just walked down a 100 metre tunnel right into the airport, no chew and all relaxed ready to board the flight.

Downside maybe paying a little over the odds but this was vastly outweighed by knowing you would be in the airport 100% guarenteed for the time of your flight.
No last minute traffic jams to worry about, no arriving all tired and flustered after a 2 hour drive to then have a 2 hour wait and then a 5 hour flight, etc.

Worth every penny.

Advantages - getting in the vicinity of the airport the night/day before travel. Onsite parking. Shuttle bus into the airport. Not being late

Disadvantages - possible noise dependant on site. maybe for some the cost is a problem??

I thought they would be obvious. Advantage close to the airport, disadvantages generally not close to city centres and noisy.

Best for me is the fact you get free car parking for 14 days so i know the cars safe

sometimes you get a discount, don't have to worry abour being late for flight, but will you accually get sleep when all you hear are planes taking off and landing.....
