Do I ask out a girl I've never even met?

I've developed a crush on a girl that I've never met, but know about through the internet. We seem to have a lot in common, but she may be out of my league. She's posted on a social networking site that's she's taking applications for an informal date. I've never been on an official date before, and I don't want to ruin it if she says yes. Whatever shall I do?
