The benefit is that you get to be independent and not crammed on a coach with everyone else. You can choose what time to leave and how long you stay at a destination. At most destinations you can also hire a child seat which is very important if you have little ones. The disadvantage is that the lowest class of car always seems to be a Fiat Panda with no air conditioning or power steering and you have to spend quite a lot of money to get a sensible car like you'd drive in the UK. A better car is far more important on a lot of holiday destinations like the Canaries where you are driving on a cliff edge for most of the day.

Its a great way to see the sights ~ you have the freedom to roam around and not depend on taxi's and public transport. You can purchase additional insurance from car hire companies to ensure that you are not liable for a penny if the car is damaged or stolen. It is cheaper to pre-pay in the UK as you get a better rate. Holidayautos do worldwide car hire and are very competitive.
You can still have a drink if you want ~ just remember to leave the car by the hotel!

It depends on where you are going to. Someplaces are simply easier to see with a car, others you can see quite well on foot or by using taxis/buses etc or perhaps you are there just to lie on the beach and don't want to see the surroundings!

On the downside you are responsible for the car and any damage it might sustain and you can't drink if you are out!
