Someone told me I can work in the U.S. for one year with a canadian passport is this true?

No. You need TN-1 status.

Yeah, you need a TN card - which is a travel visa. That requires a letter from the employer verifying what you are doing there, as well as your credentials. The bottom line is that you can - but both you and the employer have to prove that there is noone in the states that can do the job and that's why they need you.

false, you still need to apply for a work card & then social security number after that. Been there, done that for my wife 3 years ago

definitely not. You need a visa to get into the country and then you will need to get a social security card...it is is a pain in the butt too.
