My stepdaughter lives with my husband and myself and her mother lives 3 hours away. We have physical custody and they share joint custody. My stepdaughter needs to go in for her 6 month dental checkup and her mother insists that she get pulled out of school to see the dentist where she lives. Logic says that she should be established with a dentist in the area where she lives. The crazy woman is refusing to release the x-rays to the dentist we have chosen. What do we need to do to have these x-rays released?

YEP.. been here before.. only there is 5 hours between us. Joint custody means that either parent can make decisions for the child. Call the dentist and see what they need to get them released. Tell them that you have joint custody, and can send them a copy of the court papers. They should have no problem doing it if you can show proof that there is joint custody.

I agree.. there should be a dentist where she lives..

Good Luck!!

If your husband has shared custody all he has to do is sign a medical release form to obtain is daughter's dental records.... The only way she could refuse was if she had full custody and your husband had none.... tell him to contact the dentist where the mother is an ask for him to transfer them to the new dentisit if he refuses bring a lawyer into the mix and see hwo fast he hands them over.

How long ago did she have these x-rays done? is it the full x-ray or just a wing bite? It may be time for new x-rays. If so, the insurance will cover this 100% and there will be no need for the release. Check into it.

Have you called the dentist and asked for them to be sent directly to the new dentist?

She actually does not need an x-ray just for a cleaning.

Good luck!

First of congratulations on figuring Aspen Dental out before they actually did any work on you. They are rip offs all over the country. They do over charge you. I had a few things done there until I heard about all there unfair practices now They owe me a refund. I to am going to go to another dentist. They say I can have my x-rays if I pay for them also. Thats because they where free with the first exam. They told me for around $250. Well the new Dentist that I am going to is just going to take the new x-rays, because Aspen did not submit it to insurance. However if your case is different and they did submit YOUR X-RAYS to insurance, then thats what they are your x-rays and they must give them to you because they have been paid for. If it wasen't submitted to your insurance just redo the x-rays with the new dentist.

Just have them take a new set of X-Rays. As she's a new patient, they should do this anyway. I've never had to have my dental records transferred from one dentist to the next. If this dentist is insisting on her other records, ask "WHY do you need old records?" because any problems, new or old, will be apparent on the new films.

If you have custody then all you need to do is sign a consent form at your dentists and he will get the records from the other dentist.

Sounds like playing tug-o-war with an innocent child to me...
Perhaps you could take the girl to the mother's dentist and then get the REAL issues out on the table...I think, for the child's sake, both sides need to put down the arms and join forces on one side...the child's
Good luck to you all--

You probably will need to get a court order or contact the firm that handled the divorce to be sure which way to go. Best of luck dear.
