Most "wine guys" enjoy port, and you may be able to get a port from his birth year. They also sell belnded ports that are 20, 30 and 40 years old, if it is one of those birthdays.
Otherwise, I strongly agree with the idea that you find out one or two of his favorites, set a price range, and ask the smart guy at the wine shop for something similar.

First choice: If you know where your uncle purchases wine, they probably know him and his taste -- make a phone call if the store is not in your area.
Second choice: Visit a reputable local wine shop (not a grocery store) that specializes in fine wines.
Ask to speak with the wine "expert." Explain your need and your price range. They will help guide you to an appropriate selection and probably supply gift wrapping.

I would find out what his favorite varietal is. Then research online to see which wineries are known for this type of wine.
A special choice would be to order from a winery or visit the tasting room and purchase wine that is only available from the winery. This way he could be tasting something new and unique for him. Avoid buying a wine that he can easily pick up at a nearby store himself if you can.
Cheers!

for your information, ice wine is no more difficult to make than any wine and it isnt that the grapes are in short supply, they are the same grapes which are used in all the wines on the niagara peninsular, what happens is they " leave " some of the grapes on the vines, when the first frost happens the water in the grape freezes...then they pick and press them quickly...the result is a very very sweet grape juice..i believe the ratio of the grape is 5 to 1....meaning 5 litres of " wine " grape juice.....1 litre for ice wine...thats why the price is so high

Instead of a wine, how about wine accessories? A decanter? Foil cutter? A fancy corkscrew? One of those stoppers that take the air out of the bottle to preserve it, I think they're called something like VacuVins. Or maybe a nice cheese board and knife. And I just saw this neat olive tray this morning. It's also a game board and if you jump a certain kind of olive you have to eat it. (Think an antipasto mix of olives.) That's available from www.moma.com
Or you could look at Crate & Barrel, or www.iwawine.com

You might want to consider, rather than to purchase him a bottle of wine, wine gadgets.
If he's into wine, he's probably already got a vacuum sealer and a decent bottle opener/corkscrew set-up... but there are a ton of other gift items that he'd probably love.
Try shopping here: http://www.wineenthusiast.com

Chocolate Port's are very popular these days. Ice wine's too. I've seen Ice Wine for as little as $19, and it was good.
I had a great Malbec called Dos Lomos. I haven't found it since, but if you can find it. I bet he would like it. It comes in a short squat interesting bottle too. If you find it, let me know where I can get it.

Put together a basket with wine glasses and other accessories, include a couple of bottles of wine. I like "Old Vine" Zinfandel, but get advice from someone who has some training.

I recently tried a red wine from Translvania... It was really good, and the whole Vampire theme was funny.
Good luck

Get him an ice wine...they are expensive (around $100+)cause they are hard to make and the grapes are in short supply ...basically ice wines are wines made in canada or near the north and are made when the grapes are frozen. They are good!
