It is a comfort thing, they just walk around in circles until they think that is going to be the best sleeping position. My dog does that to her bed to fluff her pillow.

I think they are going back to their outdoor wild days. Wolves and the like circle before lying down to make sure the area they are sleeping in doesn't have anything that can cause them an injury. At least that what me science teacher told me back in the 80's

It releases stress. Just as some people may stretch before laying down. Ive had a lot of luck with dogs that have "issues" calming them and their behaviors by walking them in a circle to relieve the stress of a situation.

I've heard that this is an instinctive behaviour left over from their wild/wolf days. They tread in circles before lying down to make sure that there aren't any snakes or other harmful things in the spot where they're going to lie and rest.

"stomping down the grass" as in making a nest to sleep in. i dont remember where i heard that quote, but i heard it when i was a child and it always stuck with me cause my dog used to do it too. my new pup will even do it on her bed

The movement of their feet when they are spinning makes what ever they are laying on softer, and comfier to lay on.

its equivelant to you tossing and turning when you first get in bed until you find the most comfortable position to fall asleep.
