Prior to the 1990s, Haemophilus influenzae type b was the primary cause, but widespread vaccination (Hib vaccine) has greatly reduced the incidence of this infection. Yes. But I'm not sure if the bacterias/virus are the same of the human meningitis.

i dont know the answer for sure but i dont see why they couldnt, they have a immune system just as humans do...if i was you i would contact a local vet. to seek the info, they could probably tell you the answer and a few other things in detail more, that may help you out on your assignment
