It would seem to me that the religion of peace would be Buddhism. How many wars can you think of where it was fought in the name of Buddha? Even in times of war, such as during Vietnam, Buddhists would meditate on peace and truth.

"When used in a generic sense, a buddha is generally considered to be a person who discovers the true nature of reality through years of spiritual cultivation, investigation of the various religious practices of his time, and meditation. This transformational discovery is called bodhi (literally, "awakening" — more commonly called "enlightenment").

Any person who has awakened from the "sleep of ignorance" by directly realizing the true nature of reality is called a buddha. The Buddha is said to have been only the latest of many of these; there were other buddhas before him and there will be others in the future. According to the Buddha, any person can follow his example and become enlightened through the study of his words ("Dharma") and putting them into practice, by leading a virtuous, moral life, and purifying the mind.

The aim of Buddhist practice is to put an end to the sorrow (dukkha, Sanskrit/Pali: दुक्ख) of existence. In the words of the Buddha: "I teach one thing and one thing only: suffering and the end of suffering". To achieve this state of the end of suffering (Nirvana or Nirodha), adherents train and purify the mind by following the Four Noble Truths and the Noble Eightfold Path, eventually arriving at an understanding of the true nature of all things. In this way all ignorance and unhappiness ends, and liberation is attained.

Buddhist teaching encourages individuals to practice and verify the Buddha's teachings based on their own personal experience, and also after consulting with 'the wise'. If they find the teachings are valid (leading to more happiness and less suffering), they can apply these teachings in a practical form into their daily life if they so wish."

An end to sorrow? How peaceful that sounds...

The way you asked the question testifies that you have taken a side much before you have asked the question.

coming to what you have asked in fact every religion in this world was formulated to impart knowledge among the followers. The person who has a rational and level minded head would seldom harm others intentionally.

I am an Hindu and believe Islam preaches peace and brotherhood, but there is a catch here, there are people in the name of Islam indulge in rhetoric an jingoistic works generally termed as extremism.

So my dear friend do not maintain any prejudices on any other religion.

have a nice day

Islam is the religion of peace if you practise the faith by the teachings of the sunnah and by what is set for you in the Quran. If you follow perverted leadership which has concocted the words for their own likings (totally out of the original meaning) then I would say ANY religion can be used as a religion of chaos. Look at the Salem witchhunts. look at Hitler saying he was finishing the job for Jesus, look at the crusades of the Christians. I could go on. Does that mean Christianity is a violent religion? I would say NO. Not if you follow the True teachings of Christ. It is the same thing with Islam.

It IS a religion of peace.....Think about it this way: If terrorism and citizen upheavals makes Islam a religion of violence, then what do the Westboro Baptist Church, and the Crusades make Christianity? Not too many people think about that one. People need to unlock their minds and think in America today, it seems like a concept that is dying out......

I think all three branches of religion that were born from the same root (Islam, Judaism, Christianity) are about peace. It's just the people who practice them, and pervert them, that make them about war.

I REALLY do agree.

1*When `Umar(one of the best prophet's companions and the 2nd caliph for uslims) entered Jerusalem at the head of a Muslim army in 638 CE, just six years after the Prophet's death, he entered the city on foot, as a gesture of humility in a city sacred to Muslims, Christians, and Jews. There was no bloodshed. There were no massacres or forced conversions.

On the contrary, those who wanted to leave were allowed to do so with all their possessions. Those who wanted to stay were granted protection for their lives, their property, and their places of worship. `Umar very famously declined to pray one of the five daily prayers in the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, lest in years to come Muslims might try to turn it into a mosque in his memory. Instead, `Umar cleansed the so-called Temple Mount with rose water and built a small mosque there, where the Dome of the Rock now stands.

All of this is in marked contrast to what happened when the Crusader armies later took Jerusalem. Seventy thousand men, women and children were slaughtered. Any remaining Muslims and Jews were driven out. When the city was recaptured by Salah Ad-Din (Saladin), the Christian inhabitants were granted protection and were escorted to safety by the Muslim army. But those who have a different aim would have us believe that it is Islam that is cruel.

2*When Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) finally entered Makkah at the head of a Muslim army in AH 8, he did so not to force the Makkans to convert, but because they had violated their peace treaty with the Muslims. The Prophet entered with great humility, ordering that there should be no fighting or bloodshed. Instead, he forgave all those who had opposed him and the growth of Islam for so many years. Those who wanted to leave were allowed to do so. The whole city, so impressed by the men they had fought against for so long, converted to Islam.

3*Another great example that many deliberately choose to ignore is that of the Muslim presence in southern Spain for nearly eight centuries. Described as Islam's Golden Age, this was a time when the Islamic civilization flourished. It was centuries ahead of northern Europe in the way arts and sciences were encouraged and in the way cities and towns were advanced well beyond anything in Germany, France, or England at the same time.

4*During this Golden Age, the rights of Christians and Jews were respected and honored, and many of them rose to high positions at court. When the Catholic monarchs Ferdinand and Isabella reconquered southern Spain, Muslims and Jews were either forced to convert to Christianity or were put to death. Mosques and synagogues were desecrated and destroyed. The excesses of the Spanish Inquisition had begun.

i agree 100%.. bcuz iv read the Quran n the Ahadeeth.. n wut the media portrays is totally opposite.. any person that has a lil bit of knowledge of Quran can mark the propaganda the media is doin now a days...
cuz one thing that struck me was that the word "al qaeda" means "the ones who sit BACK at home n doNOT take part in JIhad".. n this word has come many times in the Quran.. n it has always come in the bad sense...
so tell me .. why would a Jihadi organization which might be havin 70% arabs would have such a pathetic name.....
i believe that Al Qaeda is a fake organization made by the CIA n MOSSAD .. so that they get a reason to invade muslim land!!!

now abt the peace part:
if ur talkin abt jihad being cruel etc.. then let me get it straight.. Jihad is only allowed in Islam to figth for their rights or when someone is being opressed (wether they r chrisitans, jews, hindus etc)... if they r bein opressed under a tyrrant ruler etc.. then its an obligation on us to fight against the tyrrants...
there r many forms of jihad..
in one.. which we have fight against the our materialistic desires...
in one which we fight with the pen.. that is u write against the evil
n then there is jihad with money. in which u give money for good stuff etc.. n one is jihad with the sword.. where u fight against the tyrrants etc...

even in war.. islam doesnot allow the killing of women, children or elderly .. n even cutting of trees is not allowed !!!!

look, what i agree on is that islam is the religion of peace, not that all muslims are...just because, some of them are not, doesnt mean tht the whole religion is bad..i mean just look at the no. of criminals, big or small, who are christians or jews etc.but we know very well that their religions didnt ask thm to do so..........to prove that, i guess you might have to read the whole qur'an or at least a portion of it yourself (not listen to what others say)

I do not have extensive knowledge of the muslim faith. But I have not seen Christian or Jewish leaders come out and say "by any means neccasary" or behead people in the name of Allah. I have researched where Mohammed(or however it's spelt) organized and founded the muslim religion based on other faiths. He made Jesus a prophet. Abraham is mentioned along with Moses and other old testament figures. Initially, the muslim faith may have been intended for peace, but now it is kind of obvious that it is not. The koran shows that.
