How long do you have to be in contact with carbon monoxide before you die? I am researching this for my latest novel and my characters are exposed to carbon monoxide in a locked room - how long would it take for the carbon monoxide to be fatal for the characters (in minutes) ? I really appreciate if someone could help me! Thanks x

It would depend upon the concentration of the carbon monoxide and the amount of ventilation in the room. Perhaps a respiratory therapist or physician could help you out with your question. Good luck.

Its to do with the concentration, not time.

11-35 parts per million...safe
35-100 ppm....need to ventilate, no medical effects
100+ ppm, causes flu like symptoms within 30 minutes, death depends on the concentration above 100ppm, it can be anything from never to 5 minutes

why everyone doesn't have a CO meter in thier house baffles me.

Loss of consciousness - 30-60 min.
Fatalities in adults - 2-3 hours, less in small children.

A few years back, where I used to live, there were occasional deaths from CO exposure in homes with malfunctioning chimneys/heating systems.

it really depends on the levels of carbon monoxide in the room. higher levels, it could take just minutes. call your local fire marshall to find out specifics
