Yes. They are chemically almost the same so they would have the same preservative effect on the sauce and about the same acidity (The vinegar institute says that cider is about a percent stronger) The only reasons I can think of to prefer cider vinegar is its subtle apple flavor or because it costs less. For something like chili sauce, I doubt that anyone could tell the difference in flavor very easily, so it would be a safe substitution.

There is a difference in the taste and acidity of the two vinegars. White vinegar is more for salads and mild dishes, I would guess that the cider vinegar would be better in the Chile sauce because you want a more pungent vinegar. Friend 06

Short answer: Yes. However, there is a difference.

White vinegar (aka "distilled vinegar") is a bit sharper and lacks the distinctive mellow flavor of cider vinegar. That said, white vinegar will serve the same purpose (acidity) in the recipe.

You might also try lemon or lime juice.

It will work but the taste will be a bit different but it should still be great. You should see what folks put in their chili. Chili is a very diverse meal item and limited only by your imagination.
