RAW formats vary between digital SLR manufacturers, but for the Canon 400D, the size is roughly 10MB.

Therefore a 1GB Compact Flash card will be able to hold roughly 100 RAW photographs. Therefore if you are a RAW-exclusive shooter, a 2GB CF card is a recommended minimum. A 'fast' CF card is also recommended as this affects the continuous shooting rate of the camera, especially if you are shooting multiple RAW exposures (which are large files).

Many users also use the RAW + JPEG shooting mode available on the 400D where the camera saves each exposure with a RAW AND JPEG copy. So for a particular photo, if you find you need RAW-based adjustments, you can use the RAW file. However if you are satisfied with the shot (i.e no RAW needed), you could just use the saved JPEG copy instead, saving you time from needing to access the RAW file using a specialist program and then converting it to JPEG (if need be). If you shoot in this mode, expect approximate 13-14MB for each exposure.

The 400D's RAW files are 9,300 KB, so a 2 GB memory card will hold just over 200 pictures. And I can recommend SanDisk Ultra ll memory cards. Or SanDisk Extreme lll, if you do a lot of continuous shooting - they're a bit faster.
Here's a link so you can confirm that file size, and also look up the jpg sizes at various quality settings: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canoneos400d/page12.asp
That link will drop you half way into a great review for the 400D, in case you were still wondering about other things, too.

The RAW file size for the 400D is actually...9.8MB. That would be under 100 shots using a 1GB card.
You can also shoot RAW+Jpeg (a 9.8MB +3.8MB file). About 70 shots using a 1GB card.
So, regardless of which file type you prefer, I think a 2GB
card is the minimum. Go 4GB if you intend to do a lot of shooting. I would recommend a fast card such as the Sandisk Extreme III.
