He still has some puppy left in him, mine does the same and he's about 10 mos.
What breed of dog is it? I know small/mini dogs like Dachsunds are prone to just "squatting" rather than lifting. My neighbors dachsund kept trying to lift and it threw his balance off and the little guy would fall right over!
IF you are that concerned, you could always check w/your vet.

My male Westie squatted the majority of the time until he was about 2. Does your dog live with other dogs? Our vet mentioned that sometimes when a dog is in a submissive position in the pecking order, they may exhibit this behaviour - but it's nothing to worry about. I have 2 Westies who are brother and sister from the same litter. The girl has always been dominant - it's like she's the troop commander and my little boy is her troop! No bullying or nastiness, but he definitely submits to her most of the time. Otherwise I think you may just have a pacifist or slow learner - I'm sure he's lovely.

I think your dog is castrated. Is he? This is the only answer I can think of. Normal intact dogs (not castrated) lift their leg to pee and this is done so many times while walking and urinates little by little at a time because of the marking instinct in intact male. If you dog was castrated while still a puppy, he may not develop the marking instinct and urinates like a female dog (no lifting) as he has no more testosterone (the male hormone) which is the cause of his instinct. So if he is castrated, do not expect him to lift his leg while urinating. If a dog is castrated at an adult age (say for example one yr old), the instinct may remain because it already has become a habit although there is no more male hormone.

You have more than enough good answers but I just had to add mine.
Don't worry! Just be glad it pees -smile! I have had many dogs and each one graduated ed at different ages. I was excited each time, like when your baby takes its first steps. "MY PUPS A THREE LEGGED DOG NOW!"
All of my dogs have been "Fixed" which has never affected how they peed accept for one. She is a female "CHOW" and for awhile she would do three legged. I think it was from watching the other dogs for she started squatting again.

You don't say how old he is. puppies don't and depending on the breed can be up to a couple of years until they reach sexual maturity. Has he been castrated at an early age this reduces the urge to scent mark.
Old dogs often don't especially if they become "rheumaticy"
DON/T WORRY provided he pees regularly and shows no other symptoms. If in doubt see the vet
Be grateful no constant stopping to squirt a few drops, no dead or brown plants (maybe brown lawn!) why do you think I favour bitches mote lol

Bol (bark out loud). No, there is NOTHING wrong with him!! I have to male dogs and they squat 95% of the time. Only time they lift their legs is on walks when they water the trees and bushes. Is he neutered? Someone told me that most male dogs will squat to pee if they are neutered at a young age. Don't know if that is true or not, but it happened w/ both my boys.

there is nothing wrong with him!! We have a almost 10 year old Lab and he hasn't raised his leg a day in his life. We also have a 1 1/2 year old St. Bernard and he don't either!! It might have something to do with having him neutered, but doubt it. (if he is). Over all, don't worry about how he pees, just make sure he is!!!

I have a 7 yr old Greyhound that does the same thing for the most part. Every once in a while (last time was at the vet's in their yard, on a bush) he does lift...I don't feel it is anything to worry with. Just enjoy your dog!

No, there's nothing wrong. Some dogs learn later than others. Make sure to socialize him with other male dogs to help him learn. Some dogs won't though, especially if they've been neutered. And some dogs will only "hike" when they're around bushes or fire hydrants and not if they're peeing on flat ground.
