The papal crown, or tiara, was traditionally worn by the popes of the past few centuries until the pontificate of Pope John Paul I.
Pope John Paul I (1978) declined the use of a tiara as did his successor, Pope John Paul II (1978-2005).

As Pope John Paul I is the last to wear it he must have given it away.

Good point. The Roman Catholic Church holds an obnoxious amount of wealth. Just think what good could be done if they spent the money on real ministries instead of building cathedrals.

The same is true for other religious groups such as the LDS (Mormon) church. They hold countless Billions in assets but spend relatively little on helping the poor.
