If he wants to collect money from you, he'll have to take you to court... if you lose and owe him money and fail to pay, then your credit can be damaged. But your credit is intact until your time in court... be sure to check it periodically. As for the bad reference, don't worry about it. Many places don't check... and if you have proof you paid your rent every month, you can always supply that information.

I'm a landlord, and the only way he can damage your credit is through refrences, Say another landlord call for a reference, he could say you either didn't pay on time or left with outstanding bills still owed him, a little advice, always take pictures W/dates. when you move into a new apartment, always point out to the landlord anything you may see (damage) prior to moving in, ask if these things will be fixed. We have always alowed tenants to make alterations. if it is something that will stay in the apartment after they are gone we would adjust the rent so we would pay for whatever was done... Try not to use him as any reference, You could always use a family member or close friend to say you had been living with them prior, leave him out of it.. and remember from now on pictures and everything in writing..

If he's a crook, he may be just bluffing. Get legal help, that may stop him from doing either.
