We recently moved into a new apartment and our cat is beginning to take to it pretty well, but whenever I'm in the shower, she starts to cry constantly. She's become much more vocal ever since we moved in here. What's the deal here? It's really depressing because I don't know what to do about it. I'll hold her for awhile and she stops for a few minutes and then it starts again. What can we do and why is she so extra vocal?

You don't mention the cat's age or breed. If the cat is a young adult female, she may just coincidentally be coming into heat and crying for that reason. Siamese or part Siamese cats are usually more vocal because of the Siamese blood, Siamese talk and have a variety of vocalizations. A female Siamese in heat can make sounds that sound really awful, and perhaps the eeriest sound a Siamese makes sounds just like the cry of a human baby.

You may want to have the vet check your cat just to make sure there are no medical problems, nothing painful that could be responsible for her crying.

If the cat is healthy, the crying when your cat is in the shower is probably because she's figured out she can get your attention when youre in the shower, by crying. Not giving her attention for crying, not holding her when she cries, will teach her that crying doesn't work to get attention. Give her attention at times when she isn't crying and ignore her when she cries and you know she has plenty of food and water and that there are no other legitimate problems she is trying to tell you (such as the door to the room where the litter is, being accidentally shut, to cite an example of a problem my cats have told me, by crying and then making it obvious they wanted me to follow them, which I did and quickly fixed that problem!) Give her some cat toys to play with, so she has something fun to do. Another thing cats love is the floor to ceiling cat trees. I have one of those by the window and the cats love to get up on the perches on it and watch things out the window. Consider getting another cat, cats keep each other company, play far more vigorously together than a human can play, and groom and entertain each other for hours on end although they still like and want my attention too, but aren't as pesty about it and usually they come for attention when they know I'm not busy.

Cat Constantly Crying

Cats & Dogs like to be in contact with their Pride or Pack.

Since you have moved, she is disoriented. When you take a shower,.. are you letting her in and talking to her to know your still there?

She might be scared of the water (and the different smell it has which could block you out) or just looking for you,.. or worried about your life or you disappearing into the water and/or think your forgetting her.

Just get her use to you being there,.. whatever you do... DO NOT LET HER OUT in this state of confusion she is very likely to get hurt, killed, or lost.

She might also be use to visits out of the house being assosiated with bad things and anxious there is a vet that is going to hurt her she is waiting a VERY long time on.

When doors are closed between you for now, verbaly confirm you are still there. Do not over Baby or Pamper or Emotionalize things,.. it will feed the crying and worry that something bad and regretful is about to happen.

It may take her a couple months to adjust. [I should say in addition on top of what has been said,.. the following may be discovered as well and make the process take a little longer] Then you may figure out there were cats there or are strays around,... or the neighbors have cats and that is makeing her new terrortory going to take a while to get use to because it's someone elses as far as she can tell.

the meowing may be due to stress in a new environment. My cat did that when we moved from tennessee to LA - became very vocal. But he eventually stopped after a couple of weeks or so. Since your cat seems to vocalize only when you are in the shower, why don't you take him in the bathroom with you - he'll meow meow, but at least he'll see that you are around and not in any danger at all. He'll eventually stop. Just be patient with him.

ur cat is depressed and stressed out from the move...ive had it happen to me...the only thing u can do is try to comfort her as much as possible hold her in ur arms and walk threw the house with her and talk to her as u r walking let her now there is nothing to be afraid of and that ur not leaving her in "this strange new place"all by herself....shes just afraid and stressed out from the move and when a cat feels insecure they will holler and become vocal looking for comfort in a human or other cats in the area...

Just like people cats get stressed out from moving too. When she cries I would pick her up and comfort her by telling her that it is alright and that you are here to stay.
Another good thing is to buy Feliway and spray it in the house where she hangs out the most. Feliway helps comfort cats in stressful situations and you can get it at PetsMart or online.

Spend extra time with it. It is probably thinking you left, and it may cry when you leave also. You have to make sure you make your cat comfy.

There is a calmitive you can plug into an outlet.

She must feel more comfortable when she's with you at all times. Let her in the bathroom with you. One of my cats comes in the bathroom when I take a shower everyday. She just lays there and waits for me. I think it's cute.
