It is wrong to be compassionate for ego-stroking reasons--God looks at the heart and motives. But that's the only time I can imagine it being wrong to be compassionate

No.The Bible says that there is law against love. Time and time again Jesus show compassion upon the masses in feeding them and healing them. To be compassionate is to be Christ-like. the greater your compassion, the greater your spiritual growth. So go ahead and be compassionate in everything that you do and the Lord will richly bless you. Thank you for this very good question. Jesus loves you.

I don't believe it's ever wrong to feel compassion or act compassionately.

Sometimes though, acting compassionately IS showing some tough love.

For example, my BIL, in and out of jail, has an alcohol problem, when he drinks, he's violent.
Compassion is NOT allowing that behavior.

When I was young in the Lord, I felt compassion for satan. This was not wrong on a sin level. It was wrong only in the sense that I was wasting my sympathies on one who had no use for them, and did not deserve them.

The insight I have received from reading the Bible, and from personal experience, along with the wisdom of others has led me to believe that compassion would only be wrong in the sense of wasting it on one who did not deserve and/or want it.
