According to CIA figures, 14.39% of the world's population are non-religious. That's 938,972,000 non-religious people. Only 2.36% actually identify themselves as atheists.

I'm unsure of how quickly these numbers are increasing (if they are), but I'll try to check it out.

In Europe the number of atheists is increasing rapidly-many countries like the UK can now rightly be called secular states. In the US the process is slower but even there the writing is on the wall for Christians-their creed is going to be systematically purged from all western democracies within two decades.

I don't know about atheists, just agnostics. A recent Harris Poll stated that 42% of Americans don't know if God exists. That number is up from 34%, just 3 years ago. I think George W. Bush and his Bible-thumpers had something to do with that.

No way of knowing I'm afraid.

That's because, unlike organised religions, you can't count the number of people attending an atheist 'church' every week. Many people when asked say 'oh, I'm Church of England' or whatever out of habit, even though the last time they went to church was for aunt Tammy's wedding. But if you questioned them closely I dare say many would qualify as atheists.

It does make you wonder though, if over 70,000 people are bothered enough to declare themselves 'Jedi' how many more are atheist and just don't say?

don't know how many, but i don't think the number of atheist is increasing very fast as atheism is the end of a thoughtful process, thoughtfulness is not encouraged in the modern world. what should frighten believers is the indifferent nominal christians/muslims/hindus. a great mass who are totally uncaring, for them religion is just something they write on a form.

No one really knows, but I expect the number to continue to rise just until the end of our age begins and the world really starts to fall apart. After that, many atheists will revert back to believers, if they ever were.

Since athiests don't gather to worship anything, it would be impossible to know. Suffice it to say, that all people will have made up thier minds about worship, when Jesus returns. According to biblical prophecy, 9/10th of earths population is going to be wiped out on His return. Athiests have already seperated themselves by thier own choice. Seeing they refuse to open thier eyes, they won't be able to percieve when the Lord returns, and will be left on a desolated planet. There they can repent at leisure.

As fast as the number of believers increases, since it has to maintain balance.
