The same reason most people on the street approached by a newsperson sound as if they never graduated 6th grade: there are no longer any standards of education. If you specialize in mathmaticas in college, nobody is going to make you take anything further along than English 101 and a speech class, so you could actually graduate from a university without being able to speak proper English...just look at Basketball and football players!

It might be owing to the fact that most people on this forum aren't native speakers of the language, but then I'm surprised how even the Brits and Americans use lazy abbreviations and text message language.
And for those who don't care, spelling does matter, the proper use of a language must be encouraged simply because a language is a beautiful thing. However this excludes additions that may enable language to be a more effective tool, the errors on these forums are simply not these, they are gross mutations.
Besides, people will be able to understand each other better if the spelling were better, thereby furthering the whole purpose of Yahoo! Answers

Outside of the obvious non-native Enlish speakers here (which they totally get a pass, at leat they are trying), too many people are using IM text talk on here. They are too lazy to type it out and even lazier not hitting Check Spelling in the upper right corner of the Answer box. Habits form in what you practice and teachers have complained for years that yougner people are using IM text talk so much in their daily life that they are using it in the classroom. They are saying (for example) "luv" so much they are forgetting how to actually spell the words correctly! Fine with me, the dumber the younger generation stays, I'll never have to worry about competition in the workplace, because IM speak isn't acceptable on a resume or application, they'll barely be able to get a job.

Im far from the best speller there is and Ive been known to make mistakes. I dont always use proper grammar and punctuation on here but I do try to use spell check. Usually you can tell if english isnt someone's first language but there are alot of Americans you never learned proper english.

I agree, it's such a shame. Allowing for those on the site whose first language isn't English, the general standard of spelling and grammar is appalling. What I really hate is the amount of people who use texting abbreviations instead of full words - it is lazy, incorrect and ignorant. We have a fascinating and creative language and I don't like to see it being murdered by idiots. Please people, make an effort.

your'e amazed, thats ok ,but calling it awful,i think is a little to harsh,i'm sure many are not as much in command of the english language as they would like to be,using spell check & learning by reading other questions should certainly help,in time hope we will have better spellings & language too.

I consider my English to be at a reasonable level of comprehension, however sometimes i really dont have the energy to type properly, laziness ; )

one thing though that I find confusing...why are people so bothered?
you ask a question in order to recieve an answer.
people take time out to answer you and all you can do is criticise(not you personally but people in general)

so what if they shorten their type to txt style? as long as its understandable.
this is a community with every type of person from all over the world logging on.
not everyone has the same priorities or standards.

i would really love it if people relaxed a bit and stopped making criticisms and demands.

there are always going to be fools and ignorant people giving offensive answers, and some others prefering to type in txt.
accept it and move on

there are more pressing issues to deal with.

The standard of spelling on here is atrocious - largely because a lot of people text speak on here. Plus the standards within schools in the UK have dropped to sewer level.

The other reason is that a lot of Americans use the site.....and with respect Americans are not known for their cerebral ratiocination!! Generally they are quite stupid!

Bet you checked your question a couple of times before you posted it just in case, easy to make a mistake if brain is running faster than fingers. Maybe Mobile phone texting does'nt help much, lazy English is becoming a norm so it seems. I'm usually listening to a live cast or something while tapping away and it does'nt take much to confuse me so mistakes happen.....
