Dr. Hans von Ohain, a 22 yr old German invented the first jet engine. The first jet aircraft to use his engine flew on 2 Apr 1941. After WWII Dr Ohain was brought to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base where he continued to improve the jet engine.

Sir Frank Whittle invented jet engine in 1939.It was W1 Whittle engine fitted on Gloster E 28 Aircraft & made its first flight on May 15, 1941.

Bostonianamo's right. Sir Frank Whittle put the first Patent on, but a German scientist (Hans von Ohain) built the first one and beat him to the post (but only just). The Luftwaffe had the very first Jet aircraft followed very closely by the British.

The earliest recorded attempt at a turbine type engine dates all the way back to the first century! And the first patent of a turbine engine dates to 1791. The first successful flight of a modern type turbojet powered aircraft (the He 178) dates to August 27, 1939 and was based on a design by Hans von Ohain.
