If you mean a sweet chestnut - remove the green part if still present (stamping works). Prick the brown shell with a sharp knife and boil for 5 minutes (also cooks them). Cool slightly (but not too much or it won't work), and peel off the brown shell. Make sure you get the inner membrane off too, this is bitter and will leave a nasty taste. Alternatively, roast in a chestnut roaster (like a frying pan with holes in the bottom) over an open fire, mmm.

Chestnuts do not need to be cracked simply use a sharp knife to slit the outer casing before cooking (to avoid the nut exploding) then shell whilst still warm.

Hit it with a hammer. That's the way I'd crack walnuts when I was a kid when I picked them up from under our walnut tree. It's fun!

use one of them things that you can open chestnuts with or throw it at your mates head. it isnt the easiest but its the funnest!!
