why do fewer than 1% of our elected officals have children in this war? they and there children should be 1st in line to fight for this country until this happens i will never suport a government that gets us into wars. while president bushes daughters are boozing it up much like he did during the last conflict in vietnan our soldiers are dying how can you make excuses the this eletest administation?

It would be very interesting seeing them go thru basic and head to Iraq toting the secret service along.
Get a grip.
Did you know that in the VOLUNTEER army that we have there are people from very wealthy families?
And that we don't have a draft? I've heard that way back people could buy their way out of military contracts. Not sure if that is true - but it's not anymore.

They wouldn't be spared in a draft. The reason they aren't in the service now is probably because they chose a different path, like college. You might want to research what a draft is. I don't think it's right for you to sit there and say that people making their own choices is "making excuses." We don't need government to make those types of decisions for us, you know.

Because they're literate enought to use the correct version of their/there and literate enough to correctly spell "elitist," therefore they are able to get other jobs (unlike yourself who's limited by his (lack of) education). While there is great honor in serving this country (which I did for 16 years), the "rich" have, for the most part, a different mindset. As has been pointed out, we have a VOLUNTEER military...it is their choice to serve or not. They choose not to serve, as can you. Wonderful thing about those who do serve, they allow you to choose what you do freely...including moan and complain about perceived inequities.

There is not a draft. Only brave people, or people that needed vocational training that the armed forces provide, are soldiers in this war. There is no incentive for rich kids to go fight. Sad. Very elitist.

Voluntary military... it has nothing to do with the whole "money" thing. I know wealthy people that are in the military today.
And basically by you saying that you will NEVER SUPPORT a government that gets us into wars while Bush's daughters are not serving, you are in my eyes, a communist. Why does his daughters need to serve in order for you to support what is happening in the world. If his daughters do not want to serve, there is NOTHING saying that they have to. Just like if you don't want to serve, you don't have to.
I am sick of people saying that they aren't going to support the government because of such ridiculous reasons.
