ask him what it means if you really want to be with him forever than you should be comfortable enough with him to ask him anything

It sounds like he is enthusiastic about the idea. But, judging by your apparent concern, it sounds more like you are leaving something out. I suspect it is the tone of how he says it, the way his eyes look, as if occupied with something else, that is really what bothers you. Perhaps your boyfriend is not expressive, though he may be sincere, and this is what concerns you.

If he answered sweetly and with lots of attention, it means he wants a life together.

If he answered with blank eyes, in a thinking mood, or almost evasively, then he doesnt want a life together

You confrounted him with an idea that he has not though of yet, and in haste answered it with a defensive answer. Just give him a little time to come around to the idea before asking again. (Try in a month if he does not say anything!)

It is his way of deflecting the question by letting you draw your own conclusions to what he means. In other words, it's a nice way, he thinks, of saying I am not going to discuss that right now, or I do not feel the same.
Maybe try asking him this question?
