Irrespective of your closeness with your friend, it is always best to carry sufficient funds when travelling abroad.

In the best case scenario, you may not spend it. In the worse, you would not face any embarassment.

Not only do you need sufficient funds, you also need extra funds for all the sightseeing, eating out and shopping. Going on a tour without money is no fun.

Sufficient fund for your visa? No.
For yourself? I'd say you need to have at least emergency found.
You never know what might can happened to him and when.
It's always better to be safe then sorry.
Of course there is US Embassy, assuming you are a US citizen, but you'll still need money to get a taxi to get there! and I don't think they'll be too sympathetic to some one with lack of preparation.
PS; if you don't want to bring cash, bring your Visa/Master card at least.
