It's Welsh for "Son of"

This is a Welsh thing meaning the son of eg Huw ap Rhys would be Huw the son of Rhys. Nowadays it would have become a normal surname so it won't change through the generations.

In the welsh language, it means "son of". Example David ap Griffiths, means son of Griffiths and so on. Ap means of, and in welsh, the letter "U" is pronounced As the letter "I".So LLandudno Is pronounced as LLANDIDNO
