Where did the last name Montoya come from..and how did they pretty much take over New Mexico and Colorado..

My last name is Montoya and my family is from Los Angeles..specifically..San Pedro..

I dont have contact with anyone and im trying to find out about my roots

and as far as I know..my heritage is SPANISH..nothing else.but since i dont have NO CONTACTS..Im not 100% sure what I am
