do I have to pass through passport control in madrid,spain,if I am intransit.?

I am going from istanbul to costa rica and I will be intransit in madrid spain,do I need to get an intransit visa,I have heard if I am not passing through passport control then I dont need to get a visa.Can anyone gave me some infomation and if possible some surporting info. about the said infomation.thanks in adv.

Usually, transit visas are no longer required but a country like Spain can have a discretion.
