What would happen if I installed Windows XP home on a harddrive which already had Windows XP 64bit on it? The reason is I have 32bit applications that do not run on windows 64 and I have 64 bit applications that wont run on 32.. I need both! Eventually I will have a harddrive for each but until then I need a way of booting either one or the other.

It can be done, but at the very least you should put them on different partitions.

Yes it is possible. For example at work I have 8 operating systems running on my pc. However I use Disk Director by Acronis to run and manage them all. As far as I remember OS selector (a utility of Disk Director) enables to run up to 100 operating systems. If you want to use this software in order to accomplish your task you can read more about it here: http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/products/diskdirector/
